The Art of Growing and Showing Acanthus.
Acanthus Mollis. Has the double merit of possessing deep-cut glossy foliage and stately showy flower spikes. The large and deeply cut, foliage grows to a height of about 2 feet, and is of white and purple in colour. This is a scarcely a plant for the mixed Hardy Border unless placed far from the border edge, where its attractive foliage will run no risk of being smothered.
The Acanthus (Bear’s Breech) is one of the hardies perennials that the modern gardener can grow. This Hardy Perennial Border Plant is much sort for the length of its ornamental leaves as well as for their flower spikes of white and purple. The leaves can be dried and added to any indoor floral display, they are much in demand by flower arrangers. We have an article on modern flower arranging at:->
http://easyflowerarranginghelp.blogspot.com/
The leaves of the Hardy Border Acanthus are said to have served as a model for designs used in the ornamentation of pillars in Corinthian architecture.
The Acanthus Hardy Border Plant will flourish in a sunny or slightly shaded area of the garden. Placing the new plants at the back of the border slightly raised to allow for good drainage.
Raising the back of the flowerbed will help lift all plants.
As with all flowerbeds, to get the best results the incorporation of well-rotted garden compost is always beneficial for good root and flower production, we have an article on compost making at :->
http://gardencomposthelp.blogspot.com/
The incorporation of well-rotted garden compost is a must if your garden soil is of the heavy clay type. Also leaf mould is also very good as a mulch in the winter months, leaf mould will take up to 18 months to breakdown. Sand or sharp grit is also good for opening the soil.
Acanthus Hardy Border Plants become established slowly, they dislike being disturbed and should not be transplanted unnecessarily. The best time of the year to plant the stately Acanthus Hardy Border Perennial is March and October.
Acanthus Hardy Border Plants are suitable for the large herbaceous border or the wild garden at the end of a long lawn. They can be planted in large bold groups in a shrub border.
